Zambian Miners Score in Tucson

Posted: March 20, 2004

Eight Zambian companies — sponsored by the Mining Sector Diversification Programme (MSDP) — that attended the Tucson gem shows have reported significant sales and interest from buyers.

According to Caroline Makasa of the Zambia Mining Sector and the MSDP, buyers in Tucson were very interested in gem rough and purchased several types of it from them. "Aquamarine and citrine have attracted a lot of attention, and amethyst as well — all in rough," she said while exhibiting with other companies as part of the MSDP at the Gem & Lapidary Dealers Association show at the Radisson Hotel.

A report from a recent edition of the Times of Zambia stated that other members of the Zambian group exhibiting in Tucson also did well. Victor Kalesha of The Emerald and Semi-Precious Stone Mining Association of Zambia (ESMAZ) reported that he secured many deals for the emerald he brought to the show and made significant contacts for other stones as well. He also claimed that the team as a whole gained valuable experience and exposure while visiting Tucson.

"We are very encouraged by this trip," said Makasa. "There is a push for nontraditional mining in Zambia and other South African countries right now. In the past copper and cobalt have been the main exports, but in the last five to 10 years, there has been an emphasis on diversifying to gemstones to build the industry. Attending shows like Tucson is one way we can expand on our goals."
