Gem Named for Charlize Theron Posted: March 22, 2004 Actress Charlize Theron, the first African to win an Oscar for Best Actress, will now have a semi-precious stone named for her. The stone is a newly-discovered variety of amazonite with a quartz grain, which was found at a mine in Chalaua in Mozambique. Steven Fine, a marketing manager for a Johannesburg-based jeweler, got the idea while watching the Academy Awards ceremony, deciding that the stone should be dedicated to Theron and named "Star of Charlize." The stone, once cut and polished, will be an aquamarine-turquoise color with fine gray-blue stripes. The stone will be made into jewelry and presented to Theron during a visit to her home country of South Africa.
