View the 2005 Winners here!

Deadline: August 1, 2005
Postmarked by August 1, 2005, and received by August 6.

DIVISIONS:

  • Faceted Gems: Must be a natural gem material that is flat faceted and must be suitable for jewelry use. Concave or convex faceted stones should be entered in the Specially Cut Gems division.

  • Cabochon Gems: May be any natural gem material cut in a cabochon shape; must be suitable for jewelry use.

  • Specially Cut Gems: Include those that have been cut from a natural gem material with any lapidary technique other than flat faceting or cabbing, or any combination of lapidary techniques. This may include, but is not limited to, gems that are carved; cut with regular, curved “facets”; engraved; or fitted together into a composite. The gems must be suitable for jewelry use.

  • Gem Objects: Are those items, made from a natural gem material, that are either nonfunctional or whose function is other than use in jewelry, including but not limited to faceted stones not suitable for jewelry use.

  • Man-Made Gem Materials: May be cut into any type of object, whether suitable for jewelry, otherwise functional, or nonfunctional. They may be cut using any technique or combination of techniques.

OPEN TO
Any lapidary. Entries must be submitted by the lapidary or, in cases of collaborative work, the principal lapidary.

CRITERIA
Visual Appeal and Impact; Design; Execution; and, for functional objects only (including gems for jewelry use), Functionality.

JUDGING
Will be by an independent panel of judges whose decisions will be tallied by Colored Stone and Lapidary Journal and are final. In case of ties in tallying, winners will be determined by Colored Stone and Lapidary Journal, whose decisions are final.

ENTRIES
Must be slides of actual cut gems, whether of traditional or original design. Do not send gems or gem objects. Drawings or other design renderings are not acceptable. Each entry must consist of slides showing only one gem or set of gems, or one gem object or set of gem objects. Unrelated gems or objects must be submitted as separate entries. You may submit as many entries as you wish, but each entry must be accompanied by its own entry form and fee of $25. Multiple entries may be submitted together in one mailer but each entry should be contained in its own interior envelope. Please do not staple slides or checks to forms. Multiple fees may be paid with a single check or credit card amount, but please do not include any other fees (such as subscription renewals) in that check or amount.

ENTRY FORMS
Must be signed and postmarked by August 1, 2005 (and received no later than August 6). For confirmation of receipt of your entry, please send it via registered mail or carrier that will confirm receipt; Colored Stone or Lapidary Journal will not. Please keep copies of all entry forms and slides as these will not be returned. Enter online here.

SLIDES
Each entry must consist of one to three slides on a simple background. All gems should be shown face up; faceted gems should be shown face up, in tilt, and in profile; specially cut gems should be shown in views that best convey their aesthetics and settability. At least one slide should show the objects in full; additional views may show an area of detail, an object open or its components separate, if applicable, or other view that best conveys the object’s aesthetics or functionality. No more than three images will be judged. Please label your slides with your name, any photo credits, and an arrow pointing up to indicate viewing direction.

WINNERS
The Final Cut will be awarded to the entry deemed best overall, and First and Second Place winners will be named in each division. Winners will be notified individually by mail or e-mail. Winners will also be published in the January 2006Tucson Show Guide, the January/February 2006 issue of Colored Stone, and the January 2006 issue of Lapidary Journal.
Because we may request winning gems or gem objects for new photography, keeping entry pieces available where possible would be appreciated, although it is not required.

DISCLAIMER
Submitting an entry form constitutes granting Colored Stone, the Tucson Show Guide, and Lapidary Journal the right to reproduce the image or images in announcing winners, creating award posters, in promoting the Gemmys, and for other editorial and promotional purposes. All entrants agree not to hold Colored Stone or Lapidary Journal responsible for the protection of original designs once published.
